"This job exceeds 19 hours on a near weekly basis. When it is mentioned to the department, the 19 hour max is there because "our benefits would be terrible if we had to provide them to you as full time employees" (Assistant Director). As we have found out this is not the case but rather it is illegal for a full time student to work over 19 hours a week AT ALL. When I leave for a break, I can plan ahead and not have any homework to work to do. For thanksgiving, I was greeted with a drug issue in another stack through a resident of mine. When I was at my girlfriend's sister's graduation at WSU two years ago, I got five calls at 2:15am from a locked out resident who wanted me to get him his key. I was 120 miles away. The job never ends. We live where we work and work where we live. We are essentially the same as emergency responders who stay in the firehouse, police station, or hospital waiting for the next emergency. We are doing that as RAs in this job. Except, the emergency responders are paid for their time on call. I have been interrupted by everyone in ResLife Admin or ignored. When I am interrupted, the comment made is either inappropriate, irrelevant, or pure gibberish. My freshman year was one of the most memorable times of my life. I have spent the last three school years trying to replicate that opportunity for my residents and the residents I come to "adopt" from other locations. I am forced to keep it on a small scale because if I were to make it any larger, ResLife Admin would have to get involved. Anytime I have had to deal with ResLife Admin, I am slowed down by paper work, miscommunication, blatant lies, misinformation, and/or complete silence."
