Allow Resident Advisers and students-at-large to serve on all hiring committees for positions within University Residences

This university exists to serve students and every position within the administration should accountable to those students. The administration in University Residences, in particular, impacts the experiences of all on-campus students and Resident advisers. We are demanding that at least one RA sit on every hiring committee and that these Resident advisers should be appointed by a source external to University Residences. This is the only way to ensure student representation in housing and confirm that administration is sincere in their claims that they care about student opinions.

We acknowledge that University Residences has made an effort to include Resident advisers in their decision making processes but this input is infrequent, only given when asked for, and superficial at best. We are demanding that the administration form a permanent formal committee to have decision making power on the affairs of University Residences. The majority of voting members on this committee should be students, both Resident advisers and students-at-large, as appointed by the Associated Students. This committee should be student led, student run, and ultimately accountable to students. Resident advisers should have some control over our positions and the university we attend. This could be an opportunity for Resident advisers to exercise that power in a meaningful and impactful way.

Handling of student misconduct varies widely from community to community with the RDs exercising a lot of discretion, and thus power, over student discipline. Resident advisers are not able to effectively communicate with our residents when we are unable to tell them what the possible consequences of their actions may be. Additionally, the treatment of students should not be dependent on the mercy of their RDs, but rather a fair and just system.

Establish a formal committee, that is accountable to students and positions outside of University Residences, designed to deal with issues concerning University Residences and allow Resident Advisers and students-at-large to serve on it
Standardize treatment of residents when it comes to Incident Reports and subsequent disciplinary action
Standardize treatment of residents when it comes to Incident Reports and subsequent disciplinary action
Immediately dismiss professional and classified staff that emotionally, mentally, and/or physically abuse or intimidate students and Resident Advisers

Resident Advisers, Resident Directors, and any other employees of University Residences should not have to endure abuse in any form while performing their duties and then have their complaints of abuse ignored by leadership in both University Residences and Human Resources. We demand that the aforementioned formal committee, which will be designed to deal with issues concerning University Residences, participates in the evaluation of abuser’s employment, especially after the mishandling of cases within University Residences.
